A bold call for action: Monique Ryan, an independent MP and paediatric neurologist, is urging Australia to seize the opportunity and accelerate its medical innovation funding. With Donald Trump's controversial gutting of research funding in the US, a growing vacuum is being created, and Ryan believes Australia can step up to fill this gap.
Ryan, representing the Kooyong constituency, proposes releasing more earnings from the $20 billion Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF). Currently, only $650 million is disbursed annually, but with the fund's impressive performance, she argues for a larger annual release to fuel life-saving innovations.
The Parliamentary Budget Office's research reveals that the MRFF's value will soar to at least $30.1 billion within a decade, even with an annual release of $1 billion for research funding. This fund, established by the Turnbull government in 2015, has consistently outperformed its benchmark, making it a powerful tool for Australia's medical research sector.
Ryan's proposal has gained support from leading research and academic organizations, including the Group of Eight universities, highlighting the critical need for increased funding. The current value of the MRFF stands at $24.1 billion, and Ryan believes releasing more funds annually will not only secure Australia's research future but also improve health outcomes for all Australians.
But here's where it gets controversial: Ryan links her push for more funding to Trump's drastic cuts and staff appointments at the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Trump, along with his health secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr., has replaced experienced scientists with loyalists, many lacking medical or scientific expertise. This move has disrupted longstanding collaborations between Australian and US health institutions, including the CDC, FDA, and National Institutes of Health.
"The survival of world-class research institutes in Australia is at stake," Ryan warns. She highlights a report by the Australian Association of Medical Research Institutes, which states that without increased support, many member organizations will become financially unsustainable within five years.
Trump's proposed budget cuts for the US CDC are drastic, with a 53% funding reduction, the elimination of over 60 programs, and the dismissal of 16% of staff. Ryan will showcase research proposals that have missed out on MRFF funding, including a clinical trial on pregnancy for women with sleep apnea and a study to improve the management of post-traumatic amnesia for patients recovering from brain injuries.
"This research would have provided critical care for those with traumatic brain injuries, but we're missing out on these opportunities," says Associate Prof Adam McKay from Monash University.
