Equipment

Instructions

This is an overview of the recipe. The full instructions are below in the recipe card.

  1. Remove steak from the refrigerator 20-30 minutes prior to cooking. This allows the meat to be more tender.
  2. Place steak in the air fryer basket.
  3. Cook at 380°F for 8 minutes for rare (130° internal temp), 10 minutes for medium (145-150° internal temp), or 12 for well done(160°+ internal temp).
  4. Remove steak from the basket. Let rest for 15 minutes before slicing. Slice into strips against the grain.
  5. Slice into strips with the grain.

Storage

Store leftover tri-tip in an airtight covered container for up to three days.

Reheat leftovers in the air fryer at 380°F for a few minutes, or until warmed through.

You can also freeze the cooked steak for up to three months. Be sure to store the meat in an airtight storage bag or container. I use a food saver to keep all the air out of the food to prevent freezer burn.

Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

Expert Tips

Expert Tip: If the tri tip is already seasoned then you can skip the steak seasoning.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I cook a steak in an air fryer?

The cook time will vary depending on the thickness of the steak and how well done you like it. For a 1-inch thick steak, cook for 8 minutes for rare (130° internal temp), 10 minutes for medium (145-150° internal temp), or 12 for well done(160°+ internal temp).

Do you need to flip the roast during air frying?

It is not necessary to flip the roast during cooking, however, you can if you like.

How do you know when tri-tip is done?

The internal temperature of the steak will be 130°-160°, depending on how well done you like it. You can also use a meat thermometer to check the temperature.

Should the tri-tip always be marinated before cooking regardless of whether it is air-fried or grilled?

Yes. For the most tender and juicy results, we suggest marinating the tri-tip for at least 30 minutes.

Can the tri-tip have just a dry rub or should it also be marinated?

I love using pre-marinated tri-tip. However, feel free to use any steak marinade or dry rubs such as Montreal Steak seasoning, homemade steak seasoning, Homemade Seasoning Salt, or Cajun Seasoning.

Variations

  • For extra flavor, marinate the steak in your favorite marinade. When using a store brand, my top choices are Dales or Lawry's marinades.
  • Change up the seasonings on this recipe and use garlic and herb or lemon pepper seasoning instead.
  • You can use different cuts of meat such as ribeye, sirloin, NY strip, or your favorite steak cut.
