2025 Among Warmest Years on Record: WMO Report Warns of Climate Crisis (2025)

The Earth is on the brink of a dangerous fever! According to the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) latest report, 2025 is shaping up to be one of the three hottest years ever recorded. But here's the alarming part: this isn't just a one-off event.

The WMO reveals that the 11 years from 2015 to 2025 have been the warmest in the 176-year observational record, with the past three years being the hottest of all. This unprecedented heatwave has the organization's Secretary General, Celeste Saulo, concerned about the future.

'Unprecedented Streak' and the 1.5C Challenge:
Saulo warns that limiting global warming to the Paris Agreement's 1.5C target within the next few years is a daunting task. The report highlights that the three primary greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O)—reached record-high levels in 2024, and this trend is the main culprit behind the rising temperatures.

Blair Trewin, a climate scientist at the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and co-author of the report, confirms this, stating, "The primary driver of the long-term warming trend is warming induced by greenhouse gases." With current warming levels between 1.3C and 1.4C, the expectation is that the 1.5C threshold will be breached in the coming years.

Global Warming: A Present-Day Crisis:
From January to August 2025, the average near-surface temperature was 1.42C above pre-industrial levels, indicating that 2025 is on course to be one of the hottest years ever. Professor Sarah Kirkpatrick from the Fenner School of Environment and Society at ANU emphasizes that global warming is not a future problem but a present crisis.

Heatwaves and Ocean Warming:
Kirkpatrick warns that rising temperatures lead to more frequent and severe heatwaves worldwide, a trend that has been observed over the last 60-80 years. Additionally, the warming of the oceans is a significant concern. In 2024, ocean heat content reached an all-time high, and the WMO report suggests it has continued to rise in 2025. This warming has far-reaching consequences, including the degradation of marine ecosystems and more intense rainfall.

Rising Sea Levels and Melting Ice Caps:
The report also addresses the fast-paced melting of ice caps and the subsequent rise in sea levels. The long-term rate of sea-level rise has accelerated since record-keeping began, currently increasing by 4.1 millimeters annually, with a notable rise of 2.1 millimeters per year since 2002. This melting has contributed to approximately 1.2 millimeters of global mean sea-level rise, the largest loss of ice since 1950.

The 1.5C Target: A Looming Challenge:
While the WMO maintains that it's possible to bring temperatures back down to the Paris Agreement's target, Dr. Kirkpatrick paints a more challenging picture. She believes that staying below the 1.5C threshold seems highly improbable, and even with drastic action, stabilizing at 1.5C may not be achievable. She warns that overshooting this target will lead to irreversible consequences.

The Call for Immediate Action:
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasizes the urgency of the situation, stating that immediate action is required to minimize the overshoot and its impacts. With COP30, the United Nations climate change conference, set to begin on November 10 in Brazil, the world's attention will be focused on the actions of 53 world leaders in addressing this global crisis.

And this is the part most people miss: how will these findings shape the discussions and decisions at COP30? Will the world's leaders commit to the drastic measures needed to curb global warming, or will they fall short? The fate of our planet hangs in the balance, and the decisions made in the coming days could determine our future. What do you think should be the top priority for world leaders at COP30? Share your thoughts and let's keep the conversation going!
